This presentation aims to put forward a general overview of research in Applied Linguistics in Mexico. The purpose is to present the development and relevance of some research projects in Mexico, focusing on multiculturalism and multilingualism, and the importance of these studies in the various areas of socio-cultural development.
Asociación Mexicana de Lingüística Aplicada (AMLA) was registered en 1986. AMLA focused on the reflection and implementation of methodologies around the acquisition and teaching of second languages. AMLA expanded its focus of interest due to the development of discipline and awareness of the importance of language for socio-cultural development. AMLA has members from very diverse professional backgrounds. AMLA members research first and second language acquisition, discourse analysis and pragmatics, neurolinguistics, forensic linguistics, corpus linguistics, computational linguistics, political linguistics, anthropological linguistics, lexicology and lexicography, traductology, specialized terminology, bilingualism, and multilingualism. All these fields of study have been applied in the languages spoken in Mexico. This presentation aims to put forward a general overview of research in Applied Linguistics in Mexico, focusing on multiculturalism and multilingualism in the country, and on the importance of these studies in the various areas of socio-cultural development.
