Brazilian Applied Linguistics (ALAB) has a 50-year tradition, focusing on the articulation of language with various fields of knowledge. It began in the area of foreign language education. As time went by, investigations in the field also focused on mother tongue education, digital technologies, discourse, pragmatics, textual genres, and identity practices. Its articulation with other research areas (Psychology, Computer Science, Social Sciences, Gender Studies, Pedagogy, Ethno-racial studies, etc.) has accounted for the pulsating social demands of the country and the world. Taking that into consideration, this presentation aims to put forward a general overview of research in Applied Linguistics in Brazil, focusing on contemporary social life and the interdisciplinary perspective discussed by Moita Lopes (2006/2016). We pay special attention to Brazilian research which has contributed to the mitigation of human suffering.
