Abstract :
Research has shown the increased importance of learner independence and self-regulation in making the most of study abroad (SA) experiences. At the same time we know that linguistic immersion during study abroad has become a matter of choice rather than a necessity.
In this paper presentation we wish to shed light on the relationship between students’ sense of agency and their perception of language learning success and cultural integration. In the study, 34 exchange students are tracked throughout a five month compulsory study abroad programme. During their stay all students were enrolled in an online course called SALSA (Study Abroad Language Support App) that has been designed to enhance the linguistic and intercultural benefits from their sojourn, as well as to increase their sense of agency. After completing the nine tasks in which their sense of agency, cultural integration and linguistic immersion were probed, the students were interviewed individually at the end of their sojourn. In the interviews, the students were asked to rate the level of autonomy they had exercised during their sojourn abroad and to report on their development of initiative and the strategies they had used in order to increase the exposure to the national language and to influence the choice of language during interactions with native speakers.
Results point to a strong relation between students’ sense of agency and perceived outcomes regarding language learning progress. Having a feeling of ownership of one’s behavior, making informed decision regarding the choice of language when communicating, and actively engaging in educational pursuits contributes to study abroad success and language learning attainment. The introduction of new digital media and platforms that allow students to take more control of their own learning enables them to expand their future L2 repertoires and identities.
