Abstract :

This study focuses on teacher roles in the process of developing optional English courses in Chinese senior high schools. Case studies were conducted on the two optional courses, “A glimpse into Chinese culture” and “English Drama”, in a Chinese senior high school in accordance with the requirements for optional English courses in the latest National English Curriculum for Senior High Schools. Interviews and class observations were employed to trace the whole process of course design and implementation to figure out the roles teachers played in two different optional courses. The study also recorded the factors that might influence what teachers thought of and did at different stages. This study has implications for teacher development in English teaching and learning reform in the Chinese context.
