Abstract :

The presentation will focus on mutual intelligibility on Finnish, Estonian, and languages that are closely related to them. I will represent how I am about to organise a test where Finnish testees translate written Estonian, and Estonian testees translate written Finnish. Both groups will also translate Vepsian and Livonian. The groups will translate separate words with common etymology such as Finnish "vanha" and Estonian "vana" 'old'. The words will be translated separately, within sentences and within a short text. Some testees have studied Estonian and Finnish. It is already known that Finns and Estonians can understand each other by their mother tongues. In previous studies, Finns have translated Estonian words with 50% accuracy.
